On Monday, Chinese media reported on worrying new statistics that over 80 percent of the water used by farms, factories and households from underground wells across China was unfit for drinking or bathing because of contamination by industry and farming.

Chinese citizens have become much more sensitive about health risks of pollution. While most Chinese cities draw on deep reservoirs, reports The New York Times, many villages and small towns depend on the shallower wells that were mentioned in the report.
