More than half the people in the world do not have access to regular trash collection. And each year, the world’s nations generate 1.3 billion tons of waste, 4 billion tons by 2100.

As we observe Earth Day, it’s the perfect time to consider our the literally mounting waste problem around the world. Garbage “impairs public health, pollutes the environment and threatens to drown some poor countries in toxicity,” reports Ann M. Simmons.
