Tucked beneath California’s San Gabriel Mountains is a special cluster of suburban houses developed using a concept known as zero net energy. All the homes are all built with a particular goal: they are designed to make at least as much energy as they use over the course of the year.

This is one of America’s biggest experiments trying to determine whether to zero net energy can be applied to housing more broadly. California is dedicated to seeing that all new homes be net-zero by 2020.
