The city o f San Francisco has a long and sometimes fraught relationship with the tech industry that has, on the one hand, fueled the city’s transformation, and on the other, made it uninhabitable for people on low or medium incomes, reports Julia Carrie Wong.

A new ‘Tech Tax’ proposal would require the city’s large tech employers, including Google,Twitter, Uber, Airbnb and Salesforce to pay a 1.5% payroll tax, which would generate an estimated $120m in annual revenue—revenue that could fund affordable housing and services for the city’s homeless.
