Mary C. Curtis is married to a white man and together they had a son who is black.  Her husband is a gun enthusiast, a hobby that she put up with, not one that she shared. And in recalling their shared history she remembers the conversations that one has to have with a black child, the ones that you hope keeps them safe.

While I would never fear that a police officer would mistake my prematurely white-haired, middle-aged husband of Norwegian-English-Irish descent for some kind of miscreant plotting trouble, I would worry that our tall, handsome, curly-haired black son would not get such a pass.
