During the national anthem Sunday night before Seattle’s game against Chicago, U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe knelt in a gesture of support to San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, AP reports.
Kaepernick, who refused to stand for the anthem before a preseason game against Green Bay to protest racial injustice and minority oppression, received a lot of public attention, most of which was not positive.
Rapinoe said she supported “everything that he’s standing for right now,” and was disgusted by the way he was being treated by the media. “We need to have a more thoughtful, two-sided conversation about racial issues in this country,” she told AP. As a gay American, she said, she knew very well that not all liberties in this country were protected equally.
