Piper Lowery was just 12 years old when she died of complications from the flu. It had attacked her kidneys and she went into renal failure.  Her mother admits that her family didn’t get the flu shot that year and has made it her mission to spread the word about the importance of getting the flu shot for everyone.

There is no way to know Piper had gotten the shot whether she would have gotten the flu because it is not 100% effective against all kinds of flu.  But there is also the possibility that it would have indeed prevented her from getting it.  That is not a position that her mother Pegy Lowery, want any other family to be in.
