Pope Francis chose to permanently grant all Roman Catholic priests the power “to absolve those who have committed the sin of procured abortion” after a yearlong celebration of mercy and forgiveness, called the Jubilee Year of Mercy, came to a close on Sunday. This power of absolution had previously been reserved only for bishops or “expert” priests because the Roman Catholic Church holds abortion to be such a serious sin.

Francis decided to extend his original allowance indefinitely, saying in a written statement that “the sacrament of reconciliation must regain its central place in the Christian life,” reports Emma Green.
