During his speech to a group of international scientists on Monday, Pope Francis called on world leaders to continue in their efforts to fight climate change, urging implementation of international environmental agreements as soon as possible.

The pope, who has been a staunch proponent of action, warned against abandoning climate pacts for political reasons, reports Natasha Geiling, clearly alluding to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s promise to withdraw the US from the historic UN Paris climate agreement.

The pope has also publicly criticized Trump’s climate change-denying rhetoric before, during the presidential campaign, also suggesting that his vision “did not mesh well with the Christian faith,” says Geiling.
