It seems there’s been a rebirth of populism, and it’s spreading across the world. Will our worst fears soon become a reality? In her article in The New York Times, Sylvie Kauffmann discusses Joseph Stalin’s legacy and how totalitarianism is taking over Poland. Despite the crumbling of communism and the dismantling of the Berlin Wall, the gains made by democracy in Eastern Europe are now being overturned.
“In less than a year, thousands of officials suspected of sympathy with the opposition have been dismissed. Textbooks are being rewritten. Nongovernmental organizations and public gatherings are being regulated,” says Kauffmann.
We are told to wait and see, but opportune moments can be fleeting. It’s obvious that our new president, like the leaders of Russia and Poland, is now trying to reverse progress. Let’s not wait. As a reminder, the 2018 midterms are just two years away. The entire House of Representatives is up for re-election, as well as a portion of the U.S. Senate. We can overturn the balance of power. Get the vote out now. Let’s look to the future, and win back American democracy. – Ellison Walcott
