It’s that time of year when people begin planning vacations. Some women travel with their families, while others choose to vacation with friends. Still others, who love the rush of the Eat, Pray, Love experience, look forward to taking a holiday alone. Veronica Chambers writes about how traveling solo allows you to see the world through your own eyes and is, for that reason, one of the most rejuvenating ways to travel.
“For the most part, I wasn’t lonely. And when I look back at pictures of myself from that trip—snapped by other students—I see a remarkable peacefulness in my face. My smile is broad and genuine.”
Traveling alone can be enriching but be sure to read up on local culture and customs and know which areas of a country, for safety’s sake, to avoid. Also, take a phrase book with you. People always appreciate when you try to speak their language, even when they know how to speak English. Traveling across oceans to take in sights, sounds and smells you’ve never experienced before can be exhilarating and may just make you realize how much more we all have in common than we don’t. – Ellison Walcott
