The Feld family that has owned the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for the past almost 60 years, announced on Saturday that it would end its run in May 2017. The cost of running a circus of that size, the logistics of transportation and the many lawsuits filed against them for alleged animal rights abuses took its toll.
And while their closing will make many animal rights activists very happy, I know that there are many of us who remember the circus as being something special. When the circus came to town it was an event, one that I was lucky enough to experience at a very young age. I have never again been that close to an elephant or a lion, and even though they peed on me as they sauntered around the rings, I know it was a once in a lifetime experience in more than one way.
