In 2014, Obama announced a program intended for incarcerated people who were sentenced under overly draconian mandatory minimum and conspiracy laws. The Clemency Project (CP14), reports Britni, was created for people who meet certain criteria, including those many non-violent inmates who would have received a substantially lower sentence if convicted today of the same offense.
For the many women in prison not yet granted clemency by the Obama administration, time has nearly run out.
Yet there are still over 15,000 petitions pending, according to The Atlantic, despite a commitment to review all petitions before Obama’s term ends, says Britni. Many women are likely spend the majority of their lives in jail if they are not granted clemency before the Trump administration takes over.
