It takes courage to report domestic abuse. Besides the stigma, there is the very real fear that a bad situation will be made worse as the abuser often gets angrier and more volatile once a restraining order is issued. Now, women who have been encouraged to report domestic violence are subjected to another fear, one of being deported.
Last week that very thing happened in a courtroom in El Paso, Texas. A woman who was being abused was arrested on an anonymous tip while she was in court asking for a restraining order.
“According to 65th District Judge Yahara Lisa Gutierrez… it’s not uncommon for abusers to report or threaten to report undocumented partners to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents as a means of control. She said that the federal agents should avoid becoming complicit in those abuse tactics,” says Provenzano.
