Speaking on NBC’s “Meet The Press” on Sunday, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) took a swipe at President Donald Trump’s attacks on the Fourth Estate, particularly his Friday tweet in which he referred to the press as an “enemy of the American people.”

McCain did not mince words, noting that attacks on a free press are “how dictators get started.”

“When you look at history, the first thing that dictators do is shut down the press,” McCain went on. “I’m not saying that President Trump is trying to be a dictator. I’m just saying we need to learn the lessons of history.”

McCain’s comments in defense of a free press follow his recent remarks to the Munich Security Conference about the resignation of the new president’s national security adviser Michael Flynn over his illegal contacts with Russia, which he said showed that the Trump team was in “disarray.”
