I have taught my kids to get out of the pool when they pee. I was taught the same thing. Unfortunately a new study done in Canada show that many people are not bothering to get out when they need to urinate and are peeing at will in pools. And while urine may be sterile, according to Hannah Devlin of The Guardian, when it mixes with other, “compounds in urine, including urea, ammonia, and creatinine have been found to react with disinfectants to form byproducts known as DBPs that can lead to eye and respiratory irritation. Long-term exposure to the compounds has been linked to asthma in professional swimmers and pool workers.”
This summer I and others, based on this new information, may find ourselves gravitating to the ocean and lakes. Even though people may pee in those waters the consequences are not remotely the same.
