It has long been the mission of the Republican Party to defund Planned Parenthood. The calls intensified after a video was released that purported to show them selling fetal tissue. The video was a right wing hatchet job that was heavily edited to make it look like they were doing something illegal. Several investigations by different states found absolutely no evidence to support this contention, but that didn’t stop the Republicans from lying about it and falsely accusing Planned Parenthood of wrongdoing.
They are now in a position to put legislation forward that would “defund” Planned Parenthood. First, let’s be clear that no federal money goes to Planned Parenthood to perform abortions. It is against the law. Secondly, Planned Parenthood is not a line item in the budget so to “defund” them means that Planned Parenthood would no longer be able to accept Medicaid.
According to The Huffington Post:
What the GOP’s plan would do is prevent Medicaid from working with Planned Parenthood. This would effectively block patients who rely on federally subsidized health care ― about 60 percent of Planned Parenthood’s 2.5 million patients ― from choosing Planned Parenthood for their health care. And by rendering the family planning provider unable to serve more than half its patients, the bill would likely force some of its clinics to shut down.
