The House Republicans’ plan to replace the Affordable Care Act includes a clever provision to defund Planned Parenthood only by pulling Medicaid reimbursements for one year, reports Ashley Goldsmith, despite the fact that millions of people depend on Planned Parenthood for crucial medical care in America.
“According to Planned Parenthood, 2.5 million people visit their health centers each year, and they reach nearly double that amount worldwide through their sexual and reproductive education, information, and outreach programs annually,” notes Goldsmith.
For so many Americans, especially nearly three-quarters of those who live at or below the national poverty line, Planned Parenthood is the only way for them to get affordable health care. The women’s health care organization will be even more critical if the Republicans manage to pass their repeal and replace plan, which estimates say will leave roughly 52 million uninsured by 2026.
“There was absolute trust in us as people to make the decision that was right for our family,” several patients told Broadly.
