Prime Minister Theresa May has set March 29th, as the date for Britain to start the process to leave the European Union. She will invoke Article 50 which begin years-long negotiations between the members of the EU. According to BuzzFeed News, Britain’s Brexit Minister David Davis said,
“The government is clear in its aims: a deal that works for every nation and region of the UK and indeed for all of Europe – a new, positive partnership between the UK and our friends and allies in the European Union.”
Brexit was voted on last year and surprisingly won by 3.8%. The movement to leave the EU was lead by the conservative right who stoked people’s fear about immigration. They stoked ugly racist and xenophobic rhetoric, just as Trump did later in the year in the United States.
The shock of the vote left many reeling and wondering how to undo what they had done. A constant refrain was, “I didn’t really think it meant we would leave the EU…”
Voting against one’s’ self-interest is clearly not limited to Americans.
