Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has appointed 13 white males to put together the Senate’s version of Trumpcare, not a woman in sight. Given the response to the bill to repeal Obamacare that House Republicans passed has been overwhelmingly negative it is going to be hard to not only find a path forward within the Senate but one that might appeal to the different factions of the House.
Just as in the House, there are moderates who are not going to want to touch monies allocated to Medicaid. Unlike the House, there are female Republican Senators as well as Murkowski of Alaska an independent who caucuses with the GOP, who will not vote to defund Planned Parenthood. Other issues, such as the cost of premiums for people with pre-existing conditions will be front and center in any debate going forward.
McConnell has made it clear that they will not be voting on any legislation that hasn’t been scored by the Congressional Budget Office. Speaker Ryan and the House Republicans didn’t bother to wait, nor did most bother to read the bill they passed.
