On Monday the Trump administration elaborated on its decision to expand the global gag rule called Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance — a plan that eliminates over $8.8 billion in funding assistance to clinics and programs around the world if they merely mention the word “abortion” in their services. This means that the clinics that tackle many health issues from malaria, to tuberculosis, to HIV, in addition to family planning, will lose funding. According to ThinkProgress:
Despite Trump’s claim that the policy would “protect life,” research has shown that the policy actually endangers the lives of women and children around the world because it interrupts funding flows, prevents women from receiving information about safe medical options, and restricts their access to contraceptives.
Thousands of women die each year from unsafe abortions. This policy change will no doubt increase that number.
