Gay Chechens are being persecuted by their government. In April, the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta reported that gay men had gone missing and were being rounded up by government officials. Reports later surfaced that many had been tortured and others killed.
According to BuzzFeed News, people are looking for visas to leave the country and are in hiding. The U.S. has denied them entry even though they are in danger of being tortured and murdered by their own government led by Ramzan Kadyrov who professes that there are no homosexuals in his country:
The Russia LGBT Network spokesperson told BuzzFeed News that “negotiations have been difficult” with representatives of countries that could provide safe refuge for survivors of the violence. She would not name the countries the organization was still trying to secure visas from because this could put any Chechens whose applications ultimately succeeded in danger, but she said in an email to BuzzFeed News on Tuesday that “we were informed that the US is not going to issue visas for people from Chechnya.”
