Former FBI Direcotr James Comey’s prepared testimony gave the American public a disturbing narrative, one in which the President of the United States repeatedly violated the norms of independence that are meant to place the FBI above politics.
“Comey’s testimony Thursday presented a reliable narrator for that story. And the dogged questioning… made for high drama that drew its power not from partisan confrontation, but from the excitement of finding out the truth,” notes Lind.
The political fallout from Comey’s firing, and the consequences of the broader Russia investigation and the subsequent cover-up, is far from finished. After Thursday’s hearing, however, some players were left in a stronger position—like the FBI and James Comey himself—while others saw their version of reality seriously undermined.
