Michael Brown’s parents just reached a settlement with the city of Ferguson. The amount agreed to hasn’t been revealed, but it is irrelevant. Town, cities, and states pay out millions each year as the buy their way out of culpability. The parents of Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland all received payment as a substitute for justice. It is far easier for officials to commit to paying out settlements than to commit to changing the culture and the requirements for being an officer of the law.
So what a few young Black men, innocent of any crime other than being Black, are murdered by cops.
It is likely that the Philando Castile’s mother will file a wrongful death lawsuit. Given the extraordinary incompetence of Jeronimo Yanez, the cop who murdered of Castile, it is highly possible that she will receive a substantial settlement.
A life for cash is never an equal equation.
Even justice is not enough to mend a heart that is permanently broken. Cash is a tawdy response to losing a child, a son, a daughter, a father or mother, a husband. But it is all this nation seems to be willing to offer Black people whose family member’s only crime was to be Black in America.
