North Korea claimed that is successfully fired an intercontinental ballistic missile yesterday into the Sea of Japan. If true, that missile has the capability of reaching Alaska. According to NBC News, the state television announced that North Korea “is now a proud nuclear state, which possesses [an] almighty ICBM rocket that can now target anywhere in the world.”
The United States and South Korea responded by condemning the launch and by firing a missile of their own into South Korea’s territorial waters. NBC News reports that “Russia and China proposed that North Korea declare a moratorium on nuclear and missile tests while the United States and South Korea refrain from large-scale military exercises.”
The call was issued in a joint statement Tuesday after talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
To date, however, Kim Jong-un has ignored any restrictions on his weapons programs imposed UN Security Council. President Trump’s response to the ever increasing threat was to tweet,
Trump seems to forget that he tweeted that this would never happen.
Let’s hope that China is able to do more than it has in the past to address the threat close to their borders. The US may be militarily capable of helping to respond to the escalating situation but this administration is out of its depth when it comes to a considered and informed response.
