Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee have written a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions requesting answers as to why he settled a case with Prevezon, a Russian real estate company that is owned by the son of a powerful Russian scion. The company also happened to be represented by the same attorney that Donald Trump Jr. met with looking for dirt on Hillary Clinton.
According to Business Insider,
That attorney, Natalia Veselnitskaya, represents the family of Pyotr Katsyv, the former vice governor of the Moscow region, whose son, Denis, owns the real-estate company Prevezon. The DOJ had been investigating whether Prevezon laundered millions of dollars through New York City real estate when the case was unexpectedly settled two days before going to trial in May.
The letter questioned the settlement and pointed out the events may be related.
“We write with some concern that the two events may be connected — and that the Department may have settled the case at a loss for the United States in order to obscure the underlying facts.”
The Trump administration and its supporters want us to believe that this is a “nothing burger.” What they are really asking is for the American public to allow them to turn this nation into their own fiefdom, one that they can personally profit from while they break laws without recourse. That is not “making America great again.” It is turning our democracy into a farce.
The fact that the Democrats have 12 outstanding unanswered requests for information to the Justice Department is an example of Sessions’ hubris and intent to remain above the law, accountable to no one.
