According to a new report from BuzzFeed News, 50-year-old R. Kelly wields enormous power over young women who are hoping to make in the music industry.
“It was as if she was brainwashed,” a mother told BuzzFeed News, recalling the last time she saw her daughter. “[She] looked like a prisoner — it was horrible.”
Some of the women, and parents who once belonged to Kelly’s inner circle have come forward, saying that, even now, he’s still keeping young women holed up in rental properties in Chicago and Atlanta, controlling what they wear and who they talk to.
Jim DeRogatis, who wrote the latest in BuzzFeed News, has been covering Kelly’s misconduct since 2000 “when he received an anonymous fax tipping him off to lawsuits that revealed horrifying alleged details of sexual relationships with underage girls,” says Broadly’s Kimberly Lawson.
When asked why so many people seem to struggle to accept the allegations against Kelly, he tells Broadly he believes it’s in part because of his acquittal.
DeRogatis also blamed the entertainment industry and media journalism industry who failed to cover the trial and continue to ignore the dozen of civil lawsuits filed by young women over the years—mostly enjoying the music and ignoring “the accusations against the man.”
