An increasing numbers of students are demanding ‘trigger warnings’ for books that feature graphic scenes of rape and violence, something like the ratings system developed for films by the Motion Picture Association of America but for books.

“I understand the need, if possible, to emotionally detach when discussing and reading about difficult topics. But isn’t discomfort the place where real learning takes place?” asks Professor Horvitz.
