For the past three years, now, police recruits in Washington state have undergone a new kind of training at the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission. Officials here say they are determined to turn these recruits into ‘guardians of democracy’ rather than ‘warriors,’ reports Kimberly Kindy.

The emphasis is now on training police officers to help and to protect and no longer on using fists and weapons to control suspects. “Gone, too,” Kindy writes, “is a classroom poster that once warned recruits that ‘officers killed in the line of duty use less force than their peers.’ ”
