We have always been a nation of immigrants. Our greatness comes from our diversity, our “plural-ness” not our oneness. The current fear that populates the minds of so many has brought us to the brink of denying our inherent need and history of embracing those who want to come to our shores and be a part of our society. Donald Trump and other Republicans are using that fear as fodder for their campaigns regardless of the consequences, regardless of the people, including the children they affect.
There is high school in Portland, Oregon that reminds us how to be Americans, and how to negotiate the difference in cultures rather than to close doors on those who truly value being in a land of opportunity.
