Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Iran, and gave the Iranian ambassador to Saudi Arabia 48 hours to leave the country, after its own beheading of a Shiite cleric triggered outrage among Shiites across the Middle East. The Saudi Foreign Minister accused Tehran’s Shiite government of undermining security in the kingdom.

The rift between the the region’s two most powerful players threatens U.S. diplomacy aimed at securing peace to the Middle East and promises more violence in Yemen and Syria, where the two back rival factions, reports Liz Sly.
