Congresswoman Michele Fiore, 45, emerged as a very unlikely mediator during hours of tense negotiations on Wednesday. Ultimately, the congresswoman from Nevada, working with an FBI specialist, helped secure the peaceful surrender of the last four holdouts at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Burns, Oregon.

Republican Rep. Fiore built her reputation as a “brash-talking, gun-toting 2nd Amendment advocate,” writes Alexandra Zavis, but Fiore managed to leave out the bluster when she delivered her plea to the occupiers to stay calm and stay alive. Ultimately, she was successful.
