A longtime civil rights proponent, Sen. Bernie Sanders is the last person who’d endorse a campaign strategy that ignored black voters. In fact, Sanders strongly believes his promise to fight income inequality would benefit African Americans as much as any other Americans.

But, he happens to be running against the Clintons who are both very well known within the black community.

After a series of overwhelming defeats in states with large black electorate the senator’s campaign has been largely targeting whiter states in order to pick up momentum and delegates wherever it can. So, best intentions aside, this is the new and awkward reality, write Vanessa Williams and John Wagner.
