The ongoing civil war in Syria has displaced almost 5 million people. They have fled to other countries as refugees. While some are able to make it to countries that have more structures and institutions in place to handle their needs others find themselves in refugee camps in places such as Lebanon and Iraq.

For women, the displacement is often harder to bear than men.  They are often unable to find work and live in impoverished conditions within the camp.  There is little security and they often find themselves the victims of violence and sexual exploitation.  Some have spent years inside camps without ever having left its confines.

Some basic measures need to be put in place, such as legal aid and more security to allow women to do more than exist.
