On Thursday, 33 million people in the U.K voted but their votes will affect the lives of more than 500 million people living throughout the 27 remaining nations in the alliance known as the European Union..

One of the oldest members of the European institutions that emerged in the aftermath of World War II, writes Charlotte Alfred, Britain is the first nation to leave. After the vote on Thursday, E.U. leaders immediately went to work to make sure that the Brexit did not have a contagion effect.

It remains to these 27 member nations to decide just how strong the European Union will be.
