A new, as yet unpublished, Harvard/Northeastern survey shows that half of the guns in the U.S. are owned by just three percent of American adults.

According to “the most definitive portrait of US gun ownership in two decades,” reports Lois Beckett in the Guardian, we Americans own approximately 265 million guns, which amounts to more than one gun for every American adult and means that 133 million of these guns are concentrated in the hands of a “group of super-owners who have amassed an average of 17 guns each.”

The survey also shows that the number of guns in America has increased by 70 million since 1994t the same time, while the percentage of Americans who own guns has dropped slightly to 22 percent from 25 percent.
