Dr. Homa Hoodfar, a retired Canadian-Iranian anthropology professor specializing in Middle Eastern women’s studies, was first arrested briefly in March, and then re-arrested after she returned to Iran for personal reasons following the death of her husband in June, reports Sirin Kale.

At that time, Hoodfar was transferred to the notorious Evin jail in Tehran before being admitted to the hospital in August after months in solitary confinement.

Hoodfar was released on “humanitarian grounds, including her illness,” according to Iranian state media, writes Kale, amidst serious questions about the legality of the Iranian authorities’ treatment of Hoodfar while in their custody.
