In the next day or two, Hurricane Matthew will close in on the southeastern United States, threatening areas with coastal flooding, power outages and damaging winds from Florida to North Carolina.

Forecasters predict “Matthew will strengthen to a Category 4 hurricane by the time it lashes Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina sometime between Thursday evening and Saturday,” reports CNN.

Residents are rushing to prepare for Hurricane Matthew. North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory declared a state of emergency for 66 counties in central and eastern North Carolina, joined by Florida Gov. Rick Scott who issued a state of emergency for his entire state on Monday.

On Tuesday, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal declared states of emergency in their respective states, with Gov. Haley also ordering the evacuation of more than one million people from coastal areas.
