“For many of the migrants who have been coming to the Continent from Africa,” write Katrin Bennhold and Alissa J. Rubin, “the Middle East and beyond, Calais, a mere 21 miles from the white cliffs of Dover, is their last stop.”

It is a painful cat and mouse playing out over much of Europe, with migrants from Africa and the Middle East trying to scale fences or cross treacherous waters to find safety and hopefully a better life in Europe.
