From either side, the trip across the sea to Kos is risky but a relatively easy and efficient one compared to other Mediterranean crossings into Europe. In July alone, the route was used by more than 7,000 refugees.

According to Kos’s mayor, George Kiritsis, the refugee situation has become so dire that he fears violence will soon erupt without some help and direction from Athens.
