What exactly happened in 2008 to send the U.S. financial system into chaos? The film adaptation of Michael Lewis’s 2010 book, The Big Short, is about a handful of Wall Streeters who uncover the underlying problems in the mortgage market and bet against securities made up of subprime debt before all hell breaks loose, reports The Atlantic.

The most ambitious undertaking of the film is to make the financial concepts and jargon “accessible, and almost sexy,” writes Bouree Lam and Gillian B. White.
