Saudi Arabia’s execution of 47 “terrorists,” including Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr, has caused an uproar in the Middle East and with escalated tensions with its neighbor Iran. The Saudis have pulled their ambassadors out of Iran, as have their allies Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, after its embassies in Tehran were set on fire. Some worry that it will escalate, but others believe that this is a purposeful distraction by the Saudis to take the focus off their rising economic instability and the rising riff within the royal family. According to some experts, the purposeful finger pointing at Iran is in anticipation of the possibility of Iran becoming stronger after the sanctions are lifted while Saudi Arabia’s fortunes decline.
