Annie Lascoe and Margo Lang want to change the way we thinks about tampons. Their newly launched company, Conscious Period, manufactures organic sanitary products so that women know all of the ingredients used. ( In the U.S., Bryce Covert writes, companies aren’t required to disclose all the components in their raw materials.) They’re also like to help poor women who can’t afford the significant monthly expense by donating a box of tampons or pads for every box bought.

It’s a fact: Women make up a third of the homeless shelter population in the U.S., and yet, most shelters don’t receive sanitary products as donations. Government programs like food stamps don’t cover their cost either.
