Seven GOP presidential candidates spoke in South Carolina on Saturday at a summit on poverty but low-income residents and advocates weren’t falling for the hype, even though the event promised to focus on “fighting poverty and expanding opportunity in America,” reports Kira Lerner.

In fact, many thought the policies and budget cuts being discussed at the Kemp Forum on Expanding Opportunity, moderated by House Speaker Paul Ryan and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), would have the opposite effect and increase income inequality, by putting more people below the poverty line.
