The Pacific Coast Highway is the first line of battle between man and nature. Hightway 1, as it’s also know, was built almost a century ago, an incredible road slicing through mountains along the ocean.

Even as sEl Niño storms have battered portions of the coastal route, they’ve also given engineers important insights into making PCH more stable. Just in the nick of time, reoprts Rosanna Xia, as California is experiencing one of the strongest El Niños on record.
