Aung San Suu Kyi led her National League for Democracy (NLD) party into Myanmar’s parliament and took her seat as leader, and so began the process of installing a democratically elected government after half a century of military rule.
Aung San Suu Kyi first won a parliamentary majority in 1990 but that result was annulled by the military leadership. However, last November, she led the National League for Democracy to another landslide victory, and finally, after 25 years of waiting, was accepted as the winner by the outgoing military-dominated government.
