U.S. Army veteran Monique Coverson and her partner Larissa Joseph have been sentenced to more than 20 years in a Kuwaiti prison for trumped-up charges of drug possession, according to her mother.

She insists the harsh punishment has everything to do with her daughter’s sexuality.

Kuwait has strict laws against drug use, and even stricter laws banning same-sex relationships, for men, at least, reports Beenish Ahmed, and carry up to 7 years in prison. The law does not mention women.
