We’re warm, we’re wise, we’re moody bitches, and we just need to embrace it.

In her new book Moody Bitches, Julie Holland talks about the hormonal cycles that affect a woman’s moods monthly and during throughout her life at key transitions. Holland suggests that women shouldn’t just try to get rid of these changes with pharmaceuticals. Not every emotion, she says, is a “symptom” to be cured.

Any woman knows that being called “moody” is a loaded word and is no compliment—combined with bitch, well, even less so. Culturally, being emotional is seen as a sign of weakness and irrationality.

But what if we noticed that the extra sensitivity we feel during menstruation made us more perceptive, for example. What if we just took a walk rather than a pill?
