According to a new report by a former health official, Mercy Health Partners hospital in Muskegon, Michigan allegedly forced five women between August 2009 and December 2010 to undergo dangerous miscarriages in deference to the Catholic hospital’s ban on abortion.

Instead of informing the women of their options when they encountered complications during their pregnancies, including a transfer to another hospital, the report says doctors decided to subject the women to prolonged miscarriages—offering a unsettling view of how the hospital allowed religious restrictions to interfere with necessary emergency care.
