On Tuesday, Democrats in the Senate introduced a sweeping new bill to standardize certain rights for people who have experienced sexual assault — the first potential law to focus directly on improving legal protections for the victims of sexual assault.

And we have 24-year-old Amanda Nguyen to thank. A state department official, Nguyen pushed for the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Rights Act after fighting to keep her own rape kit from being destroyed, reports Molly Redden.
